A Letter from the North Country Board of Directors After 37 years, North Country Coop to close it's doors on November 4th, 2007.
Get Involved in North Country! It's simple!
You can get involved in the North County Co-op community and receive discounts on purchases by becoming a member. Members can also deepen both their involvement and their discounts by becoming a volunteer. Members can also secure the future of the co-op by investing in North Country.
MEMBERSHIP
When you become a member, you become a co-owner of NCC. Members are eligible to vote at membership meetings, be elected to the Board of Directors and receive refunds in profitable years for the co-op. In addition, members receive the following discounts:
- A 10% discount every three months on purchases made during one shopping trip of your choice
- Monthly member-only specials
- A 10% discount on case purchases or full bulk units (like bags of rice, buckets of oil...)
To become a member, you simply need to fill out an application and buy one share of Class A Stock for $75. Click here for an application
VOLUNTEER
North Country Co-op is different from many co-ops in that we retain the tradition of allowing members to become part of our volunteer staff and receive deeper discounts. This system allows people of all income levels to better afford their groceries, provides needed labor for the store and helps build a real community of people who know each other. We count on volunteers to keep the co-op running smoothly, so if you have the time, want to meet people and learn more about natural products, join our volunteer staff!
To volunteer, members need to attend one of our volunteer staff orientations. You can sign up at the customer service desk or call us to sign up. At the orientation, you will learn about the history and ideals guiding North Country, as well as the different kinds of jobs available.
You can choose to become a member worker or a volunteer coordinator. Member-workers work six hours a month (typically three hours every other week) and earn a discount of 10% on all items except milk, butter, eggs, meat and clearance items.
Volunteer Coordinators or VC's (no, you won't be coordinating volunteers. We call our paid staff "coordinators," thus you would be a "volunteer coordinator") take on greater responsibilities, work four hours a week and receive an amazing 20% discount on eligible items.
INVEST
Class A Stock is common or voting stock. Ownership of this stock grants the owner a vote and according to cooperative law and principles no one can own more than one share. To further invest in the co-op, you may also buy Class B or C stock.
Class B Stock is sold in $1.00 shares. You must have already purchased Class A Stock to buy Class B Stock. Class "B" Stock is your equity in the cooperative!. After a member owns one share of Class A stock, any subsequent patronage rebate paid in stock will be paid in Class B shares. Class B stock can be issued as a patronage refund or purchased for cash by Voting Members.
Class "C" Stock is sold in $100 shares. You must have already purchased Class A Stock to buy Class C Stock. Class C stock is an excellent way for members to strengthen the cooperative with a modest investment. The Board of Directors may choose to authorize the payment of dividends of up to 8% per annum on Class C stock.
